1. The Venetians in Crete: In the 13th century, the Venetians conquered Crete and established the Duchy of Crete. Heraklion, then known as Candia, became the capital of the duchy.

2. Economic Boom: Under Venetian rule, Heraklion experienced an economic boom through trade with other European cities.

Ottoman Era:

1. Ottoman Conquest: In 1669, the Ottomans conquered Crete, ending Venetian rule. Heraklion became part of the Ottoman Empire.

2. Ottoman Architecture and Culture: During Ottoman rule, the city was reshaped, and Ottoman mosques, fountains, and other structures characterized the cityscape.

Modern Times:

1. Greek Independence: In the 19th century, the struggle for the independence of Crete and Greece from Ottoman rule began. In 1898, Crete became an autonomous island within the Ottoman Empire.

2. Greek Unification: After World War I, Crete became part of Greece in 1913. Heraklion developed into a modern city and a crucial commercial and cultural center of Crete.

3. World War II and Post-War Period: During World War II, Heraklion suffered significant damage. However, in the post-war period, the city experienced economic recovery and steady development.

Today, Heraklion is a modern city with a rich history and culture that attracts visitors from around the world, serving as a vital center for tourism, commerce, and education in Crete.
